Sustainability Commitment

We are convinced sustainability is a natural part of being a successful business and we always strive to act in an ethical, transparent and responsible way and expect our business partners to do the same.

In 1997 we first started working with our Code of Conduct, which since then has been the basis of our efforts to make our supply chain more sustainable. It outlines the requirements we place on all of our suppliers and their subcontractors for improving working conditions and environmental practices in their operations. The scope of sustainability issues has grown a lot since then, and with that, our sustainability work.

In February 2016 we consequently replaced our Code of Conduct with our Sustainability Commitment based on the same strict standards as the Code. We want to make sustainability an integrated part of all our global business relationships and work closely with our suppliers and business partners in order to achieve long lasting impacts across our entire value chain. Signing our Sustainability Commitment is mandatory for any supplier or business partner before entering a business relationship with H&M Group.

Compliance with the law is the fundamental level for all businesses, but with this Commitment we want to say that it doesn’t stop there. To be successful in the future we must continuously strive beyond compliance and make improvements that are more aspirational. Therefore, two levels of performance are introduced in this Commitment; fundamental and aspirational.

The fundamental level is the basic compliance level that is expected of all business partners before doing business with H&M Group. The aspirational level shows where we want to go long term, and that compliance is only the first step in creating a sustainable business. This means going beyond compliance with legal requirements and focusing on constant improvements. In our performance evaluation we will continually reward business partners that go the extra mile.

The three major focus areas for our Sustainability Commitment are:

  • Clear expectations regarding fair living wages
  • More detailed expectation regarding environmental performance
  • Clear standards regarding animal welfare in H&M Group’s value chain
